Helvetas is active in 22 of the poorest countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America trying to improve the living conditions of the rural disadvantaged. Its work there focuses on water supply, food security, and income generation. In Switzerland, Helvetas strives to develop solidarity through information and awareness campaigns, development policy work and the promotion of fair trade. Helvetas, which is free of any political or religious affiliation, has 43000 members, around 40000 benefactors and 16 regional groups that work on a voluntary basis. It was founded in 1955 as the first private Swiss organisation for development cooperation. To mark its 50th anniversary it is launching a programme of books to go with its popular Panorama calendar. The book series will be published by Niggli under a different motto for each year, starting in 2005. The series consists of a book of photos, a gift book and book of postcards.
This gift book is a collection of pictures and unusual quotes, adages, messages, and lines of verse, about the dreams, hopes and desires of people from different cultures and religions. The ideal gift, then, for anyone for whom you wish the best.
