Diane Saunders is a beautiful young woman who's one mistake in life was being an un-married mother in 1930's Britain. What was worse she made her living as a prostitute.
Moving to London from Norwich she had some good luck, a landlady who adored her son and a policeman who put her in the way of work in return for information. She goes from destitution to relative affluence and is trained to kill by a mobster who did not get his own hands dirty. Then as war broke out she was employed by the government to remove people from positions of power who had pro-Nazi sympathies.
Meanwhile her son Stanley was growing up in a violent society. Violet, their landlady became a surrogate mother to him and companion as he grew into a sexually active young man. She loved him as the child she never had and later as her young man fighting his way through the East-end with a strong willed mother.
