Security Identity and the Southern Caucasus

The Southern Caucasus – Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan – has emerged as an area of interest for the global political system after the implosion of the Soviet Union. It forms an inhomogeneous area, burdened with ethnic and unresolved conflicts, affected with domestic political problems, which arise from the economic and political transitional phase, and faced with the most important issue, namely, how to reach security. The authors of this book, all of them specialists either in international relations, comparative political or legal science, analyse the role the political actors predominantly interested in this region, in particular, the Russian Federation, the United States, the United Nations, the OSCE and the European Union are fulfilling or could fulfil. The authors stress the relevance of the interaction between internal and external factors in order to enhance security and recommend to the main political actors to develop a coordination pattern for their actions.
