Whereas the transatlantic slave trade is usually discussed either from a European or an American point of view, this book places the topic of forced human migration firmly within the context of West African history. Using 18th century Asante and Dahomey as a starting point, it analyses the role of African centralized states in the operation of the slave trade while simultaneously assessing the relative importance of slave trading for these states by comparing it to other aspects of socio-economic and political life. The book is intended for interested scholars as well as uninformed readers.
