This volume explores costume and the art of costuming as key cultural practices. It examines how clothing shapes identities and reinforces or challenges social structures. Combining literary, theatre, cultural and media studies, the contributions range from medieval armour and stage costumes to avatars and digital self-fashioning.
Fabrics, leather, metal, or pixels: clothing is far more than a merely decorative covering. It shapes bodies, produces visibility, and stabilizes social roles. This volume examines costume and costuming as fundamental cultural practices situated between theatre, literature, social roles, and digital spaces. At its centre lies the question of how clothing produces identities and reproduces, challenges, or subverts social structures. The contributions bring together perspectives from literary, theatre, cultural, and media studies, spanning a broad spectrum from medieval armour and stage costumes to avatars and digital self-fashionings. In doing so, the volume demonstrates that costuming always also constitutes a practice of social and medial self-production.
