This book is an Open Access publication on the status quo of electric mobility. The automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation. With e-mobility, vehicle and drive concepts are changing, and the battery becomes a central component. Power electronics, electric motors, and fuel cells also play a crucial role, reshaping the value chain. This work offers an overview of challenges and solutions—from product development to EV manufacturing, infrastructure, new business models, and sustainability.
How far back does electric mobility’s history go? What systems can be found in electric vehicles, and how are they integrated? Which technical and legal framework applies? What is the state of infrastructure? Which new business models emerge along the electric vehicle value chain? And how sustainable is e-mobility? These and other questions are answered in the course of seven chapters, updated with the latest technological developments.
Professor Dr.-Ing. Achim Kampker has been a university professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University since April 2009. In 2014, he founded the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH. Achim Kampker is co-inventor of the electric vehicle "StreetScooter" and is actively involved in numerous initiatives related to battery production, electric mobility, and sustainability.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing. Heiner Hans Heimes was head of RWTH’s Electric Mobility Laboratory (eLab) from 2015 to 2019 and served as Chief Engineer of the newly founded PEM Chair. He then acted as PEM’s Executive Chief Engineer from 2019 to 2023. Since March 2023, he has been Professor of “Production Engineering for Lithium-Ion Batteries” and, together with Prof. Achim Kampker, is responsible for the chair’s strategic and operational management.
