Beschreibung

This book summarizes the concrete, practical issues surrounding Ménière’s  disease with vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and offers perspectives and recommendations for affected persons, relatives, and medical and psychotherapeutic practitioners. In the course of Ménière’s  disease, in addition to the organic impairment anxious observation with increasing restriction of movement space, insecurity and helplessness, and even occupational disability and depressive development may occur. Nevertheless, help and support are possible, how is shown in this first English edition.

This book is a translation of the original German 8th edition Morbus Menière by Helmut Schaaf published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2017.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Even though book was subsequently carefully proofread and adjusted by the author, it may be that much of it sounds "bumpy" - perhaps as is fitting for the disorder, certainly as is fitting for the fact that the author is not a native speaker of English. Nevertheless, the facts are described accurately..

The contents

The author

Helmut Schaaf, MD, worked as a specialist in anesthesiology before he himself became ill with Ménière’s  disease. He therefore had to give up his original occupation. Since 1994 he is a seniorphysician in a neurotological specialized clinic in Bad Arolsen, now at the “Tinnitus Clinic Dr. Hesse” (Hessen/Germany). He has written several books and scientific articles on the topics of Ménière’s  disease, vertigo, tinnitus and hyperacusis.

This book puts the focus on Ménière’s disease regarding actual questions and a pragmatic approach to the illness, which is characterized by spasmodic rotatory vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus. The aim of this book is to offer perspectives and guidance for persons affected by Ménière’s disease and their relatives as well as members of medical and psychotherapeutic staff. In case of Ménière’s disease the suffering may result in an anxious observation of an increasingly limited movement space combined with insecurity and helplessness in addition to the organic impairment (hearing difficulties). Moreover an occupational disability and depressive developments may occur. Nonetheless, as this work will show, help and support are possible and available. Sidenote: This book is the 1st edition in English based on the translation of the updated 8th edition published in German.
