Beschreibung

All living cells have developed a network of biodefence systems to protect themselves against the effects of various environmental stress factors. Besides direct effects on DNA, active oxygens and free radicals are believed to cause funtional defects in living organisms by affecting the signal transduction associated with the activation of specific genes. This can, in turn, lead to cancer and premature aging. This book reviews the five main topics: 1. Protection against oxidative stress-induced damages, 2. Signal transduction systems for biodefence, 3. Apoptosis as a biodefence mechanism, 4. Radiation-induced DNA damage, repair and mutagenesis, 5. Repair of UV-induced DNA damage.
