This is a synchronic study of the traditional urban vernacular spoken in an area determined by Bolton's urban field of influence. In addition to relevant background information on the area, and a consideration of theoretical and methodological issues, Part I contains unusually detailed accounts of fieldwork and transcription. The main chapter presents a segmental phonology of the dialect, which includes an inventory of phonemes, together with their allophonic realisations and combinatorial possibilities. The study also contains a comparative component, in which phoneme distribution across word sets in the dialect and Received Pronunciation is compared. A further significant departure from the traditional local-dialect monograph is the treatment of modified speech forms as well as the most residual.
