A songwriter loses his hearing and retells his life in songs – until he realises too late that all of them were written for the same woman.
A songwriter loses his hearing. What remains are forty years of music in his head and the question of which song was for whom. In chapters that each hang on a single track, he retells the women of his life: every encounter has its note, every parting its key. He goes through the recordings once more – not with his ears, but with the memory of what they once set off – and sorts, date by date, who is hidden in which chorus. The further he gets, the blurrier the attribution becomes that he has trusted his whole life. And he realises too late that all the songs were written for the same woman. "Frequency" is a novel about hearing and about stopping, about the gap between what was meant and what arrived.
