Beschreibung

This cumulative dissertation examines how legacy media companies adopt, use, and adapt to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming organizations by fundamentally reshaping how knowledge- and content-intensive work is performed, coordinated, and governed. Unlike earlier digital technologies that primarily supported or automated predefined tasks, GenAI directly intervenes in activities that have traditionally relied on human creativity, expertise, and judgment. As a result, organizations are challenged not only to integrate a new technology but also to rethink established processes, roles, and ways of creating value. Legacy media companies are particularly affected, as GenAI directly intervenes in their core value creation activities of creating, curating, and distributing content. While prior research has primarily examined the technical capabilities of GenAI, individual user behavior, and ethical implications, considerably less attention has been paid to how organizations navigate its adoption and how immediate operational changes evolve into broader organizational transformations. This cumulative dissertation investigates how legacy media companies navigate the adoption, use, and organizational impact of GenAI. Drawing on four qualitative research projects, it adopts a socio-technical perspective to examine how generative technologies become embedded in organizational practices over time. By integrating insights across different stages of technology integration, the dissertation develops a comprehensive organizational perspective on GenAI, spanning its adoption, everyday use, and broader implications for organizations and media ecosystems.
