The atlas itself provides a highly detailed differential diagnosis of morphologic changes in the uterine cervix, correlating them with the clinical aspects of disease. The atlas begins with instructions on how to obtain and handle tissue samples. After a description of normal histology, the action of steroid hormones on the cervical tissues is discussed and inflammatory changes are examined. The following chapters deal with the various forms of regeneration, premalkignant changes and lastly with benign and malignant neoplasms of the epithelial and mesenchymal origin. This up-to-date atlas reviews the latest cytologic, histopathologic, immunohistochemical and virological studies including in situ hybridization illustrating an elegant method to identify and differentiate the various types of papilloma viruses. It warns of the worldwide changing and accelerated development of cervical cancer in young women caused by specific types of papilloma viruses, which must be identified in order to give patients proper treatment and care.
