The book introduces the reader to performance engineering and combines this with the use of formal description techniques. After a general discussion of performance engineering, the book focuses on the most widely used formal description techniques in the communication area, namely SDL and MSC. The book tackles performance issues at their origin. Typical examples are inappropriate performance requirements, unsuitable system architecture or improper detailed design or implementation decisions. The book aims at professionals developing communication systems and distributed applications as well as students at the graduate level. The book is based on practical experience of the author in the telecommunication industry, on work in standardization and on teaching experience in the field including courses, seminars and tutorials on the topic.
