This book offers a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the quantum stochastic methods that have been developed in the field of quantum optics. It includes new treatments of photodetection, quantum amplifier theory, non-Markovian quantum stochastic processes, quantum input--output theory, and positive P-representations. It is the first book in which quantum noise is described by a mathematically complete theory in a form that is also suited to practical applications. Special attention is paid to non-classical effects, such as squeezing and antibunching.
This second edition has been enlarged so as to take account of rapid progress in the field, and now includes two additional chapters, on the stochastic Schrödinger equation and on cascaded quantum systems.
This title is included in the Springer Complexity programme.
Since the first edition of this book was completed some eight years ago, the two authors of this new edition have developed a very fruitful collaboration, which has led us naturally to collaborate on the revision of Quantum Noise. The emphasis on quantum optical methods remains, but the significant advances in the theoretical methods of quantum optics in the intervening period have made it necessary to add a considerable amount of new material, which has resulted in the addition of two new chapters. The stochastic Schrodinger equation is the subject of Chap. 11. The wave of work in the early 1990s on this topic arose out of the need to compute the quite com plex problems involved in laser cooling of atoms. The development of these meth ods, coupled with the growing availability of low cost fast workstations brought about a changed point of view in theoretical methods. One can nowadays seriously contemplate investigating systems with a very large number of degrees of freedom, without making the very drastic approximations which were the hallmark of the early days of quantum optics. The concept of cascaded quantum systems-the subject of a new Chap.- became essential with the growing capacity to create and use non-classical states of light. The subject matter of this chapter covers some applications of these methods, including one application to the transmission of quantum information.
