The book surveys current evidence for modular protein evolution by exon-shuffling and lists the proteins that clearly evolved by this mechanism. Analysis of the evolutionary history of these proteins is used to illustrate the principles and mechanism of this process. The book also discusses the evolutionary history and significance of exon-shuffling. There has been much controversy as to the role of this evolutionary mechanism in protein evolution. This volume attempts to eliminate some of the misunderstandings that are still quite general in this field by indicating the source of some of the conceptual errors.
