Beschreibung

This book explores the numerical implementation of Finite Element Analysis using the computer program MATLAB, which is very popular today in engineering and engineering education. The book contains a short tutorial on MATLAB as well as a systematic strategy for the treatment of finite element methods. Useful to both students and researchers in engineering, it provides various examples and exercises from mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering, as well as from materials science. The book especially stresses the interactive use of MATLAB, with each example solved in an interactive manner. The accompanying CD-ROM includes more than fifty MATLAB functions specifically written to be used with this book in the form of a MATLAB Finite Element Toolbox. An extensive solutions manual is provided as well, which includes detailed solutions to all the problems in the book for classroom use.

The revised edition of this popular book explores numerical implementation of Finite Element Analysis using MATLAB, with examples and exercises from mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering as well as materials science. Includes CD-ROM with more than 50 MATLAB functions.

This is a book for people who love finite elements and MATLAB I . We will use the popular computer package MATLAB as a matrix calculator for doing finite element analysis. Problems will be solved mainly using MATLAB to carry out the tedious and lengthy matrix calculations in addition to some manual manipulationsespecially when applying the boundary conditions. In particular the steps ofthe finite element method are emphasized in this book. The reader will not find ready-made MATLAB programsfor use as blackboxes. Insteadstep-by-stepsolutionsoffiniteelementprob lems are examined in detail using MATLAB. Problems from linearelastic structural mechanics are used throughout the book. The emphasis is not on mass computation or programming, but rather on leaming the finite element method computations and understanding of the underlying concepts. In addition to MATLAB, the MATLAB Symbolic Math 'Ioolbox? is used in Chapters 12, 13, and 14. Many types of finite elements are studied in this book including the spring ele ment, the bar element, two-dimensional and three-dimensional truss elements, plane and space beam and frame elements, two-dimensional elasticity elements for plane stress and plane strain problems, and one three-dimensional solid element. Each chap ter deals with only one type ofelement. Also each chapter starts with a summary of the basic equations for the elementfollowed by a numberofexamples demonstrating the use of the element using the provided MATLAB functions. Special MATLAB functions for finite elements are provided as M-files on the accompanying CD-ROM to be used in the examples.

Textbook on finite elements using the popular computer program MATLAB with CD-ROM

This popular textbook explores numerical implementation of Finite Element Analysis using MATLAB, which is widely used in engineering and engineering education. Stressing the interactive use of MATLAB, it provides examples and exercises from mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering, as well as materials science. The accompanying CD-ROM presents a MATLAB Finite Element Toolbox of more than fifty MATLAB functions specifically written for use with this book. The book includes a short MATLAB tutorial as well as a systematic strategy for the treatment of finite element methods. An extensive solutions manual offers detailed solutions to all the problems in the book for classroom use. The second edition includes a new brick (solid) element with eight nodes and a one-dimensional fluid flow element. Also added is a review of applications of finite elements in fluid flow, heat transfer, structural dynamics and electro-magnetics and more.

From the reviews:

"This book is written for people studying finite element analysis … . A special feature of this book is the accompanying CD-ROM which includes 75 MATLAB functions (M-files) that are specifically written to be used with this book. … Additionally, short answers to all problems are provided at the end of the book. On balance, this book written in interactive manner can be very useful to students and engineers dealing with applications of finite element method in structural mechanics." (Oleg Titow, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1057 (8), 2005)

"MATLAB is a popular programming platform in engineering education for its intuitive syntax, graphic visualization, facility with vector and matrix operations, and wide variety of add-on toolboxes available for specific applications. … is most appropriate as a course resource on practical implementation of finite elements for mechanical engineering undergraduate students who have either already taken or are concurrently taking an introductory course in solid mechanics. … The book’s style is straightforward and easy to comprehend. … Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; professionals." (M. R. King, CHOICE, Vol. v4 (3), November, 2007)

From the reviews of the second edition:

"This book constitutes the numerical implementation of finite element analysis using the computer program MATLAB. The accompanying CD-ROM includes more than eighty MATLAB functions specially written to be used with this book. … Problems from linear elastic structure mechanics are used throughout the book. The book is very useful to both students and researchers in engineering." (V. Leontiev, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1114 (16), 2007)

"The book is intended as a guide to writing finite element programs in MATLAB and understanding the main steps in a finite element analysis. The book is well written and very easy to read by students … . The author succeeded in providing a valuable tool to help engineering students learn the main steps of finite element analysis using MATLAB." (Slimane Adjerid, Siam Review, Vol. 50 (3), 2008)
