Beschreibung

Multi-phase flows are part of our natural environment such as tornadoes, typhoons, air and water pollution or volcano activities as well as of industrial technology such as power plants, combustion engines, propulsion systems, or chemical and biological industry. The industrial use of multi-phase systems requires analytical and numerical strategies for predicting their behavior. In its second extended edition this monograph contains theory, methods and practical experience for describing complex transient multi-phase processes in arbitrary geometrical configurations, providing a systematic presentation of the theory and practice of numerical multi-phase fluid dynamics. In the present first volume the fundamentals of multiphase dynamics are provided, as well as various interactive multimedia demonstrations on an accompanying CD-ROM. This second edition includes various new material such as a new chapter devoted to the mathematical tools and types of systems of partial differential equations, a completely rewritten chapter presenting the derivatives for the equations of state, as well as various extensions and improvements in all the other book chapters, including additional experiments and movies in the accompanying CD.

From the reviews of the second edition:"This voluminous bipartite monograph gives a systematic presentation of theory and practice of this important field of fluid dynamics. … it is very important to have a comprehensive and systematic overview including useful numerical methods. The two volumes have the character of a handbook and accomplish this function excellently. … These two volumes are very useful for scientists and practicing engineers in the fields of technical thermodynamics, chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, and for mathematicians … . This bipartite monograph is highly recommended." (Bernd Platzer, Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, Vol. 86 (12), 2006)"This work presents a careful and detailed introduction into the methodology of multi-phase flows and numerical solution methods for multi-phase flow analysis. … will be of interest and useful to a wide range of specialists working in multi-phase flows, physicists, chemical engineers, biologists, and also to researchers interested by the mathematical theory of multi-phase flows and connected topics as well as to graduate and PhD students. It can also be recommended as a text for seminars and courses, as well as for independent study." (Ioan Pop, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1111 (8), 2007)
