On January 10, 1992, the `Tokio Express` lost twelve containers in stormy seas in the North Pacific. One of them opened - and around 29,000 squeaky ducks drifted out into the darkness. Driven by currents, wind and waves, the Friendly Floatees began their long journey.
Almost 10,000 days later, some are still floating on the oceans. Sun, storms and salt water have faded them, but they continue to wash up on beaches - first in the Pacific, later even in the Atlantic.
Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer has been tracking their fate for decades. Many are still on the move, he says. Just recently, a duck was discovered on the coast of Maine.
The rubber ducks were tracked with the help of artificial intelligence and can now be seen in this fun calendar.
