The order Xenarthra is a group of placental mammals. However, the strangeness of Xenarthrans does not end in their high rank name or in their articulations. They are represented by sloths, anteaters and armadillos among living species and show an unusual array of characters, including both extreme specialisations and features that have been widely considered primitive for mammals. Xenarthrans are characteristic members of South American Cenozoic faunas. They are also found in the Pleistocene of Central America and Miocene to Pleistocene of North America, and a controversial form has been found in Europe. This present paper provides an overview of morphology, reproduction, physiological and immunological biology of the Xenarthrans.
