The Dublin Docklands, which are currently affected by fundamental transformation processes, are explored in this ethnographic contribution to the study of relations between port and city. It investigates their images and forms of representation, changing demographics, and urban design. The central actors in the study are a number of dockland communities, who, until the 1960s, were almost entirely dependent on port economies. Even today, these communities identify strongly with their port-related history and culture. This book explores how the transformation affects their culture, social organization, and every day practices—particularly strategies that are used to preserve old-established traditions and notions of urban space.
Häfen und Hafenstädte waren und sind aufgrund globaler Transformationsprozesse fundamentalen Umstrukturierungen ausgesetzt und haben die Aufmerksamkeit wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen geweckt. Die ethnografische Studie untersucht die Dubliner Docklands. Zentrale Akteure sind die Dockland-Gemeinden, die bis in die 1960er Jahre von der Hafenwirtschaft abhängig waren und sich bis heute mit der Geschichte und Kultur des Hafens identifizieren. Die Autorin untersucht den Einfluss struktureller Veränderungen auf die Kultur und Sozialorganisation der Bewohner und zeigt, welche Strategien sie entwickelt haben, um ihre Interessen im Hinblick auf Traditionen, Wahrnehmungs- und Aneignungspraktiken urbaner Räume durchzusetzen.
