The book contains an extensive documentation on the
Arabic dialect of Meknès by the well-known Berberologist
Arsène Roux (1893−1971), an expert in Middle Atlas Berber,
Tashelhit Berber and the Arabic dialects of Morocco. While
living in Meknès from 1919 to 1927, he acquired an intimate
knowledge of the dialect of this town that he analysed in his
so far unpublished thesis Le parler arabe des musulmanes de
Meknès (dated 1925), which places particular emphasis on
the speech of women. The work is divided into three sections: 1. 28 texts in Meknès Arabic and their translations in French, 2. Phonètique and 3. Morphologie. Especially the fi rst section is of interest for Arabic dialectologists and provides an insight into the
phonetic and morphological characteristics of the Meknès
Arabic of women. Most of the sample texts can be labelled
ethnographic, some texts are folktales, songs, riddles,
and were selected by Roux to illustrate the specifi c sound
changes in the speech of women. (Text in French language)
