In contrast to sociological theories that typically negate the existence of organisations before the 19th century, the contributions explore the possibility of organisations in social and economic relations, in law and politics, and in religious history. As a whole, the volume ties together recent research at the intersection of premodern history and sociological analysis, breaking new pathways for the study of history and historical sociology.
