This volume brings together the proceedings of the international conference held in Trento in 2014, which included collaboration between Italian and Japanese research projects. The volume focuses on communities, their spaces and political cohabitation as well as their relationships with religious life, economic exchange, and personal networks in the Alpine area between the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. They illustrate the openness of the Alpine area, where conflicts were integrated in an interaction between different political, social, and cultural spheres.
