Beschreibung

Core Ethics for Health Professionals introduces, simplifies, and overviews the confusing world of professional ethics. It is a concise student- and instructor-friendly textbook with coverage of historical developments, basic concepts, scandals, regulations, attacks on researchers, compliance training, dilemmas, emerging issues, codes of conduct, and survival strategies for researchers and practitioners.  The format and content are designed to meet the NIH and NSF “Responsible Conduct of Research” training requirements and to give students the background for their future ethical development as they enter and pursue their specialties as health-care providers or biomedical researchers.  It provides preparation for facing emerging difficult issues such as: genetic engineering, in-vitro fertilization, artificially intelligent systems, robotics, virtual reality, and automated data management. To face the challenges that lie ahead, students will need solid personal virtue,

new analytical skills, and a logical career game-plan. Importantly, the biomedical ethics peer-reviewed literature as well as key reports are introduced in this textbook.  Following these sources of evolving information is needed if one is to have a successful career.

A timely overview of ethics, emphasizing applications to biomedical researchers, health providers, and administrators

There are no simple rules to guide ethical conduct in daily practice, health professionals must have a basic understanding of several topics including ethical theories; ethical scandals; laws, regulations, and institutional policies; and public perceptions. This book can be used for self-study, for classroom instruction, and as a refresher and update by practicing health professionals. The chapters have learning objectives, focused content, a summary of important points, a quiz, and a list of key references. Although the book is arranged in a logical order, each chapter may be studied independently.

The logical organization guides readers in their professional development and acquisition of independent thinking Unique material is included on the repercussions of past scandals, crimes against science, codes of conduct, and guidelines for avoiding ethics related traps Chapter-by-chapter learning objectives, multiple-choice quizzes to reinforce understanding, and thought provoking discussions are included in order to support both student learning and instructor involvement The stand-alone chapters will fit into one- to three-credit courses The book is based on the author’s experience in: (1) chairing his university’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Committee; and (2) training pre-university, undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral, medical residents, and faculty in ethics Includes supplementary material: sn.pub/extras
