The aim of this study is a thorough investigation and comparison of Hofmannsthal's relationship to the theory of the French symbolists. A notable similarity of structure, mood and technique between Hofmannsthal's poetry and his lyric dramas and those of the symbolists, has long interested scholars and critics.
