This richly illustrated volume for the first time provides an overview of the many academic collections, the variety of which reflects the centuries of history and copious research activity at the University of Vienna in a unique way. The texts authored by the specialists in the respective collections provide information on the history, scope, status and function of the collections, which not only contain objects of high educational and academic value, but also form part of the national cultural heritage. The range here extends from conventional educational and research collections, historical collections, and collections of slides, photographs and films, to personal papers and archives, the Herbarium, the plant collections in the Botanical Garden and the Observatory Museum.

Mag. Dr. Anton Amann, Univ. Prof. (i. R.) für Soziologie und Sozialgerontologie am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Wien, ist Wissenschaftlicher Leiter des »Zentrums für Alternswissenschaften, Gesundheits- und Sozialpolitikforschung« (ZENTAS) an der Niederösterreichischen Landesakademie, Direktor des »Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archivs« an der Universität Wien und Obmann des »Wiener Instituts für Sozialwissenschaftliche Dokumentation und Methodik« (WISDOM). Schwerpunkte der Forschung sind gegenwärtig Sozialgerontologie, Altenpolitik, Qualitätssicherung und Lebensqualität in der Altenpflege sowie Globalisierung.
