Beschreibung

The phenomenon of Delphi is explored in this volume's twenty-three contributions that cover everything from archaeology to the "functioning" of the oracle, Delphi's role in Greek history, how the oracle was depicted in literary, philosophical, and theological ancient texts, and the image of Delphi that was projected in later times.
The twenty-three contributions in this volume, based on a 2017 conference, look at the Oracle of Delphi from multiple perspectives. A section on archaeology is followed by one investigating the oracle itself and its "functioning," while a third examines the role of Delphi in Greek history. The representation of the oracle in archaic and classical Greek Literature is dealt with in the fourth section, followed by Delphi's role in philosophical and theological (both pagan and Christian) texts of Imperial Roman times in the fifth. The sixth section looks at Delphi's later image, for example, in modern research on the geophysical preconditions of the Pythia's inspiration, but also Delphi's presence in modern board games. In this way, the volume offers a comprehensive view of the oracle and its manifold ramifications.
