The interdisciplinary volume analyses the structure of normative crises and transformation processes. When and why are normative certainties shuttered? How do actors manage to establish new 'ultimate truths', basic values and paradigms of normative discourses, thereby legitimizing themselves?
This interdisciplinary volume is both a theoretical and nuts-and-bolts analysis of the structure of normative crises and transformation processes, particularly in politics and religion. Why do normative certainties break down and how are actors able to put in place new 'ultimate truths', basic values, and paradigms of normative discourses and thereby legitimize themselves? What is the connection between normative critique and crisis? When and how do justification narratives change, shift or stabilize, and what is the resulting dynamic? How are new solutions formed in the dialectics of continuity and discontinuity? What do the processes in which this all happens look like? Are there ideal types of structures for the dissolution and reconstitution of norms and normative discourses, and how can these processes be explained best theoretically?
