The "Barth Book of Sermons" contains the only extant handwritten sermons by Spalding. Its Critical Edition makes it possible to gain an insight into the author's normal everyday activities as a preacher, whose intention at that time was not to publish, in an almost synchronous immediacy and an incomparable manner.
This collection of sermons contains the only extant handwritten sermons by Johann Joachim Spalding, obtained by the vicarage archives in Barth (Western Pomerania) with the help of his youngest grandson Karl Heinrich Sack. With their numerous corrections, insertions and changes, these manuscripts make it possible to follow the history of the sermons' composition and revision in an almost synchronous immediacy and an incomparable manner. In doing so, they provide insight into the author's normal everyday activities as a preacher who at that time did not intend to publish. This Critical Edition reconstructs the texts which Spalding intended to use for his sermons and at the same time makes it possible to decipher all the versions of the handwritten text editing without any problems. With its historical explanations as well as detailed indexes of Bible passages, names, places and subjects, this work provides valuable help for exploring the texts.
