This volume contains the first German translation of the tractate Gittin (writs of divorce) of the Jerusalem Talmud. This tractate focuses on the formal elements of a writ of divorce and on various procedures of the delivery of the document. The role of witnesses and messengers is also crucial for the validity of writs of divorce. Different cases of re-marriage, levirate marriage, and the legal position of children are discussed at great length. The text shows a particular interest in questions related to property. The translation is based on the Krotoszyn edition of 1865/66, but considers also textual witnesses edited in the Synopse zum Talmud Yerushalmi, Genizah fragments and parallel traditions. A comprehensive commentary explains difficulties of translation and interpretation.
