Viewing the development of concepts of religious education from the point of institutional history, the contributors to this work explore the establishment of chairs for religious education, of research institutions inside and outside of universities, and of journals and associations specializing in the field of catechetics, Christian nurturing and religious education.
When did catechetics and religious education emerge as branches of scholarship? Which profiles did they develop? Viewing the development of concepts of religious education from the point of institutional history, the contributors to this work explore the establishment of chairs for religious education, of research institutions inside and outside of universities, and of journals and associations specializing in the field of catechetics, Christian nurturing and religious education. It was the academization of teacher training and educational science which triggered the transition from instructing to theorizing, but religious education was not adopted as a branch of practical theology until the 1960s. This is the first time that the origins of religious education as an academic discipline have been analyzed .
