Beschreibung

The essays gathered in this collection advance the growing field of Critical Vegan Studies, and specifically Vegan Cultural Studies, by exploring a developing corpus of “vegan” texts in film, literature, and other discursive forms. Contributors test emergent concepts of vegan cultural production and vegan analytical methodologies that can be applied both to texts that are intentionally “vegan” and to those that may pre-date or situate themselves outside the practice of veganism. The interventions collected here pursue these aims most intensely in the context of literature and film, media that explore imaginatively and speculatively the tensions between the liberationist values of vegan idealism or utopianism, and the reality of anthropocentrism and speciesism that undergird the mainstream ideology of carnism. Contributors focus primarily on Anglo-American texts and contexts, highlighting vegan intersections among a diversity of social justice issues spanning the period from the early nineteenth century to the present.
