The study expands our understanding of the functions of proximal and distal demonstratives using the example of Old French. For the first time, in addition to referential anchoring, the author uncovers the ontological type of the “reference object.” The combination of these two criteria creates a functional profile that sheds new light on the diachrony of cist and cil.
