Writer Italo Calvino came up with diverse poetological devices to describe our complex world in its liveliness. In doing so, he constructed an aesthetics that opens up ethical discourses and assigns literature a central societal role. By focusing on the category of the "lively" and the Foucauldian concept of "biopower," this volume reevaluates Italo Calvino’s oeuvre.
