The book examines adjectival near-synonyms from the understudied
semantic domain of PLEASANT SMELL in the history of American
English. Previously, synchronic quantitative methods have rarely been
applied to the historical investigation of synonymy. As a result, the book
offers rich new insights into the factors infl uencing lexical choice in English.
