This volume is the first to examine the clergy of late antiquity on the Italian peninsula in their entirety. In systematically compiled inscriptions, clergymen, from ostiarii to bishops, uniquely provided information about the way that they viewed themselves and their position in society. By analyzing these heterogenous epigraphic texts, this volume thus makes a substantial contribution to research on society and the church in late antiquity.
