Doderer’s novel Die Dämonen negotiates the "second reality," a problem of perception immanent to all narratives. In this context, the functionalization of music and eroticism takes place on the levels of both "histoire" and "discours." The study also focuses on the way that the novel self-referentially reflects upon processes of reception and production and their ambivalent semanticizations as a result.
