The common term “social suffering” often lacks a shape or a face. Sembler extends “social suffering” to become an index of societally compelled lack of freedom, and also shows that Critical Theory did not limit itself to a critique of experiences of social suffering, but at the same time, served to disclose potentially emancipatory forces helping to alleviate suffering.
