The study investigates the shifting loyalties on the part of colonial elites in the Lesser Antilles to the centers of empire during the crisis of revolution and counterrevolution and the global war between France and Great Britain. It argues that the abolition and re-introduction of slavery in the French colonial empire served to violently recalibrate the colonial political order.
