Arthur Schnitzler’s first-person story “Flowers” (1894) is about a man who receives a gift of flowers each month from an ex-lover only to find out that she has died though the flowers continue to arrive. In addition to the story, this historical-critical edition contains the author’s handwritten drafts and explains the complicated genesis of the text, whose original morbid atmosphere Schnitzler tempered in a later revision.
