The “unwritten past” is composed of past cultures, peoples, figures, events, and situations that have left no accessible written legacies. The papers examine how historical scholars and academics – from the early modern era until the present – dealt with this vacuum, the alternative remainders of written source material they discovered, and the “histories” that were developed in this way.
