This work focusses on culturally specific notions of place maintained by the Santal, one of the largest indigenous societies of Central India. Taking a practice-based approach to religion, it presents contemporary Santal rituals not described before. The book discusses in ethnographic detail how the Santal maintain relationships to their environment through rituals and how they link these to discourses of indigeneity and environmentalism.
