Attempts at a typological classification of Old French have led to the question of whether Old French is a verb-second language. This study reformulates the question by analyzing syntactical data using systems theory and discourse tradition. Are language systems pertinent for understanding Old French syntax? Or should Old French syntax instead be explained using a discourse tradition that does not rely on systems?
