Since the beginning of the 19th century, Catalonians and Occitanians – like members of other suppressed groups – have made efforts to modernize their languages and cultures. This study attempts to show how similar circumstances can give rise to differing developments, to pursue the development of both movements in detail, and to make a contribution to the linguistic history of France and Spain from a perspective at the periphery.
