Beschreibung

"Everyone senses that protest and the policing of it is changing rapidly. This book covers the main trends through case studies from 2014, diving into what happened and how the police responded. There are some golden threads through the case studies: police legitimacy, the rise of populism and diversification of protest, the role of mis, dis and malinformation and the online mechanism for delivering it."
–Alex Murray OBE, Director of Police AI and founder of the Society of Evidence Based Policing, UK; previous Chief Officer in three forces and the NCA

“This is a very timely second volume, bringing new entries to cover the very busy period of global pandemics and widening protests about race, middle eastern conflict and migration. For students and practitioners looking for a place to start, the entries are clear, authoritative and provide a good guide to core readings.”
–Dr Peter Neyroud CBE QPM, Associate Professor in Evidence-based Policing, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, UK

Protest, activism and political violence are concerns of global importance in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Overall, this dictionary draws together key global case studies in one place relating to protest and political violence since the 1960s. It considers the ideas that inspire protest, the tactics that are used and how the state and police respond to activities of this nature. It discusses environmental protest groups, the peace movement, groups in opposition to capitalism and globalization and organisations that seek to promote various aspects of human rights.  This second edition brings existing entries up-to-date and includes new entries on protest and disorder inspired by populist extremism and the far-right, the Capitol Hill Riot, George Floyd and the BLM movement, Extinction Rebellion protests, Hong Kong protests and Yellow Vest protests etc.  Written in an accessible style, each entry is accompanied by a list of sources through which readers and students can extend their knowledge of each of the topics.

Peter Joyce is currently Visiting Reader in Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. He is widely published in the areas of Politics and Criminal Justice and his recent works include Governance of the Police in England and Wales (2 Volumes, 2026) and History of Crime, Policing, Disorder, Punishment (2023); co-authored with Wendy Laverick of Hull University.
