Beschreibung

This book weaves together these disparate threads through the study of how technology-driven innovation, clean energy solutions, and entrepreneurial ecosystems may collectively expedite progress towards a more sustainable future. Technology is rapidly changing the arena in which humanity pursues sustainability: how to produce and consume energy, how and where to allocate shared resources, and how to build inclusive societies. Yet, despite remarkable technological advancements, we continue to underutilize the potential of digital transformation and entrepreneurship for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Technology-Driven Sustainability: Entrepreneurship, Digital Transformation, and Energy Solutions for the UN SDGs, explores how technology is transforming the interconnected nature of technological innovation, business models, and policies, and their influence on sustainability transitions across sectors. This book takes a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to connect the dots between digital tools, renewable energy, and new business models in addressing global challenges including climate change, energy access, urbanization, food security, and social equity. The book is organized in five parts thematically. The first part describes the conceptual background, providing trajectories for the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability in the World of the SDGs. The second presents digital transformation, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, the Internet of Things, and smart cities as enabling sustainable solutions. The third part discusses energy transitions—everything from renewables and storage, hydrogen, decentralized systems—and the role of entrepreneurs in accelerated adoption, including the role of further motivation or constellation of change and engagement. The fourth part connects the previous themes to important sectors in society—agriculture, health, water, and industry—through enlightening cases that demonstrate the opportunities and challenges illustrated by these theorical opportunities. Finally, the book covers systemic barriers to navigating a sustainable future such as impact measurement crosses, ethical issues, and systemic and broader horizons in which we will need to develop the pathways in scaling technology to live in a just and sustainable world.

Finally, the book covers systemic barriers to navigating a sustainable future such as impact measurement crosses, ethical issues, and systemic and broader horizons in which we will need to develop the pathways in scaling technology to live in a just and sustainable world. This book is timely and relevant to researchers, practitioners, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and students who want to understand how new technologies and new business models will offer the possibility of sustainability. The core argument is that reaching the SDGs cannot happen only through policy, but instead requires the world to harness the potential of digital technologies and mindsets of entrepreneurship and assurance that these tools can be used with ethical consideration of inclusivity or left hands-free to respond creatively as they see fit. By synthesizing research, case studies, and vision from research on technology with a clear global view, we can provide both conceptual and practical understanding of how to move this technology-driven innovation toward a sustainability outcome we can measure. Ultimately, the volume addresses an important problem area as the gap between the possible (the potential of technology) and the actual (progress on sustainability). The volume acknowledges that it is hard to believe that just because we are advancing in technology we will be able to create positive results. There are many responsibilities to ensure entrepreneurship, governance, and inclusion for the future of sustainable development. This volume frames technology intake of digital transformation and clean energy innovation as an opportunity for responsibility. The volume asks you to rethink how technology and business practices can be starting points for new systems to become the basis for actions related to sustainability in this decade of action.
