Banking is entering a new era defined by open banking, embedded finance, artificial intelligence, digital assets, and a growing wave of fintech-led innovation. Yet despite significant investment and technological advances, many financial institutions continue to struggle with the same fundamental challenge: how to successfully collaborate with fintechs to create value for customers, shareholders, and society.
Drawing on more than 15 years of international experience across banking, fintech, capital raising, and financial services innovation, this book provides a practical roadmap for navigating the rapidly evolving financial ecosystem. Combining insights from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, the book examines how banks, fintech founders, investors, regulators, and corporate leaders can build effective partnerships, avoid common pitfalls, and accelerate innovation at scale.
Through real-world examples, strategic frameworks, and lessons from successful fintech-bank collaborations, readers will gain a clear understanding of how open innovation is reshaping financial services, why many partnerships fail, and what organizations can do to position themselves for long-term success. The book also explores emerging trends including open banking, embedded finance, digital transformation, venture investment, and the future competitive landscape of financial services.
Written for banking executives, fintech entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and finance professionals, this book offers an accessible and actionable guide to one of the most important shifts transforming the global financial industry today.

“Most writing on fintech-bank partnerships never gets past the press release. Mahi Sall does the harder thing: he gets the people who actually built these deals on the record about what worked, what broke, and why. For any founder or bank executive weighing a partnership, this is the closest thing to sitting across the table from people who have already done it.” (Zennon Kapron, Director, GL Insight; and author of “Chomping at the Bitcoin”)
“Banks are under siege by technological transformation. AI, tokenization, quantum, and open banking are forcing a reckoning with the build-versus-buy dilemma. For institutions that lack the in-house capability to keep pace, fintech partnerships are no longer optional; they are the only path forward. Understanding how to structure, negotiate, and sustain those partnerships is now a core competency required of every fintech and banker. I’ve seen these partnerships succeed and fail across Asia and am certain Mahi Sall’s 100+ interviews across five continents would have made a difference to many of them. The fintechs that win won’t be the ones with the best product. The banks that thrive won’t be the ones with the deepest pockets. Both will be the ones who learned to partner well. This book shows them how.” (Richard Turrin, Bestselling author of Cashless; and advisor, Shanghai, China)
“Having worked at the intersection of fintech, banking, and innovation ecosystems for over a decade, and with hundreds of fintech founders along the way, I’ve seen firsthand how many promising partnerships with banks fail, not because the product wasn’t good enough, but because founders underestimate the complexity of how banks think, decide and operate. Mahi’s book brings together practical insights from across the ecosystem to help demystify and bridge that gap, drawing on perspectives from people who have actually lived it. It offers a rare blend of realism, hard-earned lessons and practical guidance. For fintech founders, operators, and ecosystem leaders serious about building successful partnerships with banks, this is a valuable read.” (Nektarios Liolios, Co-Founder of Startupbootcamp FinTech & The Future Farm)
“The fintechs that win aren’t the ones with the best tech. They’re the ones who learn to work with banks instead of around them. That knowledge has always been tribal, passed quietly between operators who already paid for the lesson. Mahi finally wrote it down. If you’re a founder betting your roadmap on a bank partnership, read this before your next meeting, not after it”. (Keshia Theobald-van Gent, Partner, BDev Ventures; and formerly Senior Director, German Accelerator, U.S.)
“This book is filled with more than just theory. It’s filled with real-world examples. Examples that others can learn from, which is highly needed if we are to create more partnerships that can turn into much-needed innovation in the financial sector.” (Søren Nielsen, Former Fintech Founder & CEO; Partner at Canute by Thursday; and author of “Death by Innovation Theater”)
