Beschreibung

Organizations increasingly confront situations where reducing, simplifying, or intentionally limiting the performance of products and services becomes a strategic necessity. This book examines such intentional downgrade practices, revealing how purposeful reductions can generate a competitive advantage, support sustainability goals, and reshape portfolio strategy. Drawing on diverse domains—from design and innovation to operations, marketing, finance, and public-sector management—it provides the first integrated framework that unites frugalism, planned obsolescence, degradation, destruction, and incomplete delivery into a coherent conceptual system.

Rather than treating downgrade as failure or decline, the author reframes it as a deliberate organizational capability with strategic, financial, and societal implications. Through rigorous analysis, cross‑sector cases, and a novel typology that clarifies key mechanisms and decision pathways, the book illuminates how organizations design and operationalize these tactics while navigating ethical considerations and reputational risks.

Offering fresh theoretical insight grounded in empirical research, this work challenges longstanding assumptions about value creation, innovation, and organizational intent, inviting researchers to rethink how “less” can sometimes be engineered to achieve more.
