This engaging and accessible textbook supports pre- and in-service language teachers in developing essential competencies of classroom-based language assessment. Textbook modules begin by covering the principles, concepts, and theories underlying assessment and then go on to focus on practical aspects of designing and carrying out assessments. The interactive approach taken in the book means each chapter includes hands-on workshops for immediate application of concepts, as well as self-assessments to monitor learning. Readers are encouraged throughout to reflect on and make connections with their current or future classroom practice. The materials in this book have been honed on the authors' own students, future teachers of English and French, for more than a decade and have been perfected based on the feedback of hundreds of current and future teachers of all levels, in many different areas of the world. While primarily focused on English, this book gives future teachers of any language the knowledge and confidence to evaluate their students fairly and defensibly.
