The Contested Identities of Ulster Dissenters concludes a trilogy tracing the entanglement of religion, politics and belonging across three centuries of Northern Irish history. Where the earlier volumes examined the region’s dominant communal identities, this final study recovers a dissenting tradition that has both connected and challenged them—from Presbyterian radicalism, the United Irishmen and campaigns for civic reform to labour politics, cultural expression and the search for a viable centre ground after the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

Thomas Paul Burgess is a Belfast-born academic, author, novelist, songwriter and musician who lives in Cork, Ireland. A retired Associate Professor at University College Cork, his work encompassed social policy, conflict transformation, cultural identity and community relations. His books include A Crisis of Conscience: Moral Ambivalence and Education in Northern Ireland (1993), The Reconciliation Industry: Community Relations, Community Identity and Social Policy in Northern Ireland (2002), The Contested Identities of Ulster Protestants (2015) and The Contested Identities of Ulster Catholics (2018). He has also published on youth participation and European civil society.
